How to monitor brand mentions across AI engines
To monitor brand mentions across AI engines, run one fixed set of buyer questions on every engine you care about, on the same day, and compare the answers side by side. Each engine draws on different sources, so a brand can be recommended by ChatGPT and absent from Perplexity on the same question. Pondral runs five engines weekly and shows the per-engine gap for every question.
Why the engines disagree
They are not five views of one index. ChatGPT and Claude answer from training memory plus a web search they run at answer time. Gemini follows Google's index and Google's idea of authority. Perplexity retrieves a small set of live pages for each question and weights community threads, review sites, and recent articles heavily. Grok reads X posts first and the web second. A brand with a well-indexed website and no Reddit or review-site presence will typically be named by the first two and missed by the last two. That is not a bug in any engine; it is what "source" means to each of them. A longer comparison of the three most used engines is in ChatGPT vs Perplexity vs Gemini.
What each engine draws on, and what moves it
ChatGPT: well-linked pages that answer the question directly, plus third-party roundups; moved by answer-first pages and comparison articles. Claude: clear entity facts and consistent descriptions across sites; cautious about linking, so it links only when your page is the obvious source. Gemini: indexation, structured data, and links from real sites. Perplexity: Reddit, G2 and Capterra, LinkedIn articles, and fresh pages whose headings match the question wording. Grok: an active X account and mentions by other accounts. Monitoring across engines is the only way to see which of these you are missing. Keeping your name, category, and description identical across those sources is its own job; see entity consistency across the web.
The minimum setup
One panel of ten buyer questions, frozen. The same 5 engines every run, web search forced on where the engine allows it. The same weekday. A record per answer of presence, position, description quality, own-domain citation, and how many other brands were named. Four weeks before you read a trend. This is exactly the setup Pondral automates; done by hand it is roughly five hours a week for one brand. The single-engine version of the method is at how to track brand mentions in ChatGPT.
Reading a per-engine gap
Lay the answers out as a grid: questions down, engines across. The pattern tells you where the problem lives. A row that is empty on every engine is a question nobody associates with you yet; that is a content gap on your own site. A row that is strong on ChatGPT and empty on Perplexity and Grok is a distribution gap: your site says the right thing and the community and review sources those engines read do not mention you. A column that is weak everywhere is an engine-specific gap, usually entity confusion (the engine thinks you are a different kind of company) or a crawl issue.
A live example
On September 21, 2026 we ran Pondral's own panel. ChatGPT scored 79, Claude 69, Gemini 46, Perplexity 0, Grok 0. On "How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT", ChatGPT named and linked us and Claude named us without a link. On "Best AI visibility platform for tracking brands in ChatGPT", ChatGPT and Gemini cited us and Claude named us. Perplexity and Grok did not retrieve pondral.com on any question. The diagnosis wrote itself: our site answers the questions; the sources those two engines read do not mention us. The fix is Reddit, review listings, LinkedIn articles, and an active X account, not another blog post.
What to do when one engine is 0
First check that the engine's crawler is allowed in robots.txt and that your key pages are in the sitemap; Pondral's are. Then look at which sources that engine cited for the question instead of you; those are the sources you need to be in. For Perplexity that usually means a community thread or a review listing that names you under the question's own wording. For Grok it means X. Re-measure weekly. The first non-zero reading tells you which source did it; do more of that.
How Pondral shows this
The Engines page shows each engine's score, its change from the prior period, and for each question whether the engine named you and which URL it cited. The Gaps page ranks the questions by impact and lists the engines missing you on each. Every paid plan runs all 5 engines weekly; score-drop alerts fire on a drop of 15 points or more. What each engine and model is, and how a score is built, is at /methodology; how much scores move on their own is at variability. Questions people ask next
How do I monitor brand mentions across AI search engines?
Run one fixed question set on each engine on the same schedule and compare the answers per question. The engines draw on different sources, so monitor them separately rather than assuming one result stands for all.
Which AI engines should I monitor?
The ones your buyers use: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Grok cover the large majority of assistant usage in 2026. Pondral runs all 5 on every paid plan.
Why is my brand in ChatGPT but not Perplexity?
Perplexity retrieves live pages and weights community and review sites; if those do not mention you under the question's wording, it will not name you even when your own site does.
Can one tool monitor all of them?
Yes. Pondral runs a fixed panel on all 5 engines weekly and stores every answer with its cited sources.
How often should I compare engines?
Weekly, on the same day. Daily full runs add noise; a drop of 15 points or more on a named question is the level at which to act.
